Cooling of neutron stars: effects of accreted envelopes, magnetic field and crustal superfluidity

چکیده
We briefly review recent theoretical studies of the effects of accreted envelopes, magnetic fields and crustal superfluidity on the cooling of neutron stars. These effects are especially important for slowly cooling low-mass neutron stars, where direct Urca process of neutrino emission is forbidden. The effects are useful for interpretation of observations of several isolated middle-aged neutron stars. 1.

Thermal Structure and Cooling of Superfluid Neutron Stars with Accreted Magnetized Envelopes
We study the thermal structure of neutron stars with magnetized envelopes composed of accreted material, using updated thermal conductivities of plasmas in quantizing magnetic fields, as well as equation of state and radiative opacities for partially ionized hydrogen in strong magnetic fields. The relation between the internal and local surface temperatures is calculated and fitted by an analyt...
متن کاملNeutron Star Cooling
Observation of cooling neutron stars can potentially provide information about the states of matter at supernuclear densities. We review physical properties important for cooling such as neutrino emission processes and superfluidity in the stellar interior, surface envelopes of light elements due to accretion of matter and strong surface magnetic fields. The neutrino processes include the modif...
متن کاملMinimal models of cooling neutron stars with accreted envelopes
We study the ‘minimal’ cooling scenario of superfluid neutron stars with nucleon cores, where the direct Urca process is forbidden and enhanced cooling is produced by neutrino emission due to the Cooper pairing of neutrons. Extending our recent previous work, we include the effects of surface accreted envelopes of light elements. We employ the phenomenological density-dependent critical tempera...
متن کاملHeating and cooling of magnetars with accreted envelopes
We study the thermal structure and evolution of magnetars as cooling neutron stars with a phenomenological heat source in an internal layer. We focus on the effect of magnetized (B 1014 G) non-accreted and accreted outermost envelopes composed of different elements, from iron to hydrogen or helium. We discuss a combined effect of thermal conduction and neutrino emission in the outer neutron sta...
متن کاملNeutron star cooling: theoretical aspects and observational constraints
The cooling theory of isolated neutron stars is reviewed. The main cooling regulators are discussed, first of all, operation of direct Urca process (or similar processes in exotic phases of dense matter) and superfluidity in stellar interiors. The prospects to constrain gross parameters of supranuclear matter in neutron star interiors by confronting cooling theory with observations of isolated ...
